Norwich City are reportedly eyeing Raphael Wicky as a contender for their next permanent head coach, according to journalist Graeme Bailey.

The Canaries recently made the decisive move to part ways with Johannes Hoff Thorup following a disappointing run of results. Although this season was expected to be one of transition, their slide down the Championship table prompted the club to take action. Jack Wilshere has stepped in as interim head coach while the search for a long-term successor begins.

A number of names are expected to be linked with the vacancy, and early speculation has seen Wicky emerge as a potential candidate. Speaking to EFL Analysis, Bailey stated that the 47-year-old is “emerging as someone of interest,” with several other candidates also showing interest, including Wilshere himself.

Wicky, who last managed Swiss side BSC Young Boys until his departure in March 2024, has been linked with several jobs in England previously, making a move to the UK a realistic possibility.

Wicky’s background A former player with experience in Switzerland, Germany, Spain, and the USA, Wicky transitioned into coaching by managing FC Basel’s youth teams before taking charge of their senior side in 2017-2018. He also led the USA U17s and spent nearly two years at the helm of MLS side Chicago Fire. His most notable success came with Young Boys, guiding them to a league and cup double in the 2022/23 season and competing in European tournaments before stepping down in early 2024.

A calculated decision ahead Norwich’s decision to dismiss Thorup caught many off guard, but with time on their side before the summer window opens, the club has an opportunity to carefully evaluate their options. Bringing in the right manager well in advance would allow the new coach ample time to assess the squad and plan for the 2025/26 campaign.

With their rebuild still in its early stages, Norwich must ensure they get this appointment right to justify their bold move and steer the club in a positive direction.
