Dombrandt Hopes for Continued Harlequins Link Amid Uncertain Future
England international Alex Dombrandt has expressed his desire to remain with Harlequins as speculation continues to swirl around his long-term future at the Premiership club. The 27-year-old back-rower, a fan favourite at Twickenham Stoop, has been a central figure for Quins since breaking through in 2018 but is now facing questions over the next phase of his career.
Despite a challenging 2024 campaign for Quins, in which the club failed to make a significant push for silverware, Dombrandt has remained a consistent performer, both in attack and defence. His ability to carry the ball, link up play, and lead from the front has kept him in the conversation for England selection — although he was overlooked for Steve Borthwick’s Six Nations squad earlier this year.
With his current contract reportedly set to expire in the near future, rumours have circulated about potential interest from rival Premiership teams and even overseas clubs. However, speaking after Quins’ final match of the season, Dombrandt made it clear where his heart lies.
“This club means a huge amount to me,” he said. “I’ve grown so much here — as a player and a person. I’d love to stay and continue building something with this team. The fans, the environment, everything about Harlequins is special to me.”
Dombrandt’s rise from university rugby at Cardiff Met to full international status has been one of English rugby’s more compelling recent stories. Initially seen as a bolter when called into the national setup by Eddie Jones in 2019, he has since earned over 10 caps and featured in major tests against top-tier opposition.
But with stiff competition in the England back row — including the likes of Ben Earl, Sam Underhill, and Tom Curry — Dombrandt knows consistent club performances are key to keeping his international dreams alive. That motivation, coupled with his emotional attachment to Quins, is fuelling his determination to remain part of the club’s plans.
“I know there’s a lot of talk around contracts and what happens next,” he admitted. “But from my point of view, I’m just focused on giving everything I can for Quins. I’m hopeful the right conversations will happen, and we can move forward together.”
Harlequins have yet to comment publicly on Dombrandt’s contract situation, but head coach Danny Wilson has previously praised the No. 8’s influence on and off the pitch, suggesting the club sees him as a cornerstone of its future.
Fans will be eager to see Quins move quickly to secure Dombrandt’s services, especially in light of ongoing uncertainty surrounding player retention across the Premiership due to financial constraints and competition from overseas leagues.
For now, Dombrandt remains committed and optimistic, hoping that loyalty, performance, and passion will keep him at the club where it all began.
“Whatever happens,” he said, “my love for Quins will never change. But I still believe there’s more to achieve here — and I want to be part of it.”
